“A good head and good heart are always a formidable combination.

But when you add to that a literate tongue or pen, then you have something very special.”

Nelson Mandela

Tell me, what is it you plan to do with your one wild and precious life (Mary Oliver)?

We received some amazing responses to this question from pupils at the end of their course; one was (typed verbatim from child's writing):

"Our lives are short ones. They give us little time to fully express ourselves. However, for the rest of my life, I would like to live a diligent, worthy life. Sadly, I cannot give you an answer for what I will do for the rest of my life as I don’t know myself. Whether I am a doctor, teacher ,scientist, lawyer or and other profession my heart chooses, I am positive that I won’t regret it. I plan to try to be successful in anything I endeavour unto, learning and picking up from my failures. Hopefully, I will make the most of my time here, in this world, using every second wisely. I will still make room to relax as it is a fundamental part of life.

I hope I can leave life as proud as I am leaving Literacy Club."

Introduction

Welcome to the Literacy Club.

Here, education and enjoyment go hand in hand.

At the Literacy Club, we support children to succeed in their 11-plus examinations by developing a rich vocabulary, genuine comprehension skills, and confidence in key aspects of literacy and verbal reasoning.

Most children start with us in May, Year 3, or September, Year 4, and then offer two separate streams of tuition in Year 5; one for children aiming for Independent School admission, and one for children aiming for Grammar School admission.

We have classes 7 days a week and have centres in B13, B15 and WS14.

Tuition is undertaken as a joint enterprise with involved parents - children's primary educators.

We offer specialist Literacy/VR 11 Plus tuition. You can see details of our 5 recommended Maths/NVR tutors on the website.

Philosophy

I believe that effective tuition is built on having a motivational relationship with each child. It gives me great pride to see children improve exponentially when they come to one of my clubs!

While we are aiming for success in the 11-plus, it is important to understand that the Birmingham examinations are designed so that only children with a genuinely strong level of literacy ability can achieve the standard required. It is not an exam that can be fooled with any 'quick-fix' tuition!

Through a holistic and wide approach, I ensure children have a genuinely strong ability to understand and work with the English language at a good level.
